Floss and brush every day to keep the doctor away

Forgetting to take care of your teeth and gums make lead to more than a couple of fillings and stinky breath.

A new research report from University College London looked at more than 11,000 people and found those who rarely or never brush their teeth were seventy percent more likely to suffer heart disease.

It's not just heart disease, you have a higher risk of stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers.

DIABETES RISK

Gum inflammation is one of the most common complications of diabetes. Now research shows that this works both ways. Gum disease can raise blood sugar levels which may in turn cause diabetes.

Bacteria from inflamed gums may enter the bloodstream. They can trigger immune cells that cause inflammatory biological signals. These are known as cytokines.

(read here for a definition of cytokines)

Cytokines effects the behavior of cells. This includes tumor necrosis factor and the interferons, which trigger inflammation and response to infections. In short, these are way bad for you!

For example the cells responsible for insulin production in your pancreas may be damaged. Once this happens, Type 2 diabetes is more likely to occus.

In future it would not be unusual for dentist who sees gum disease in a patient advising them to get a test for blood sugar levels.

RISK TO UNBORN BABIES

In January 2010, scientists linked the death of an unborn baby to bacteria from a woman's inflamed gums.

CHEST INFECTIONS

Chest infections such as pneumonia may be linked to gum inflammations. When your gums are inflamed, you have far for bacteria in your mouth and these can spread to your throat, mouth and into your lungs causing chest infections.

CANCER

In 2007, an American study found that men with periodontal disease had over sixty percent higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
